Course Structure
Patchwork and Quilting for Garment Sewing is a thoughtfully designed 3.5-month intensive course that's broken up into two sections, Creating Patchwork and Quilted Textiles and Sewing a Garment from Quilted Textiles. Structured to help you transform both your sewing skills and your creative confidence, we'll help you design and sew a patchwork and quilted garment by the end of class—an ambitious, yet achievable task!
Section 1: Creating Patchwork and Quilted TextilesIn this section, you'll master the art of designing and creating your own patchwork textiles, ideally suited for making quilted garments. Previous students have especially liked how Section 1 builds confidence through hands-on learning and supportive guidance. You'll learn foundational topics including:
You'll also gain hands-on experience with essential patchwork and quilting techniques such as:
Finally, you'll learn the best practices for quilting your patchwork textiles, including:
|
Section 2: Sewing a Garment from Quilted TextilesBuilding on the skills learned in Section 1, you'll move on to creating a garment using your quilted textiles. Our official class project is the Tamarack Jacket from Grainline Studio (Bust 32–58”; Bust 81.2–147.3 cm), however students may choose a different garment pattern if they prefer. Previous students have enjoyed the flexibility we offer in Section 2, and we've had students make the Grainger Coat by Muna and Broad, the Parchment Jacket by Closet Core, the Nerrisa Coat by By Hand London, and the Hovea Jacket by Megan Neilsen. This section teaches how to:
If you follow our class timeline, you'll complete your quilted garment in just over 3 months! |
Hear From Past Students
WhitneyWow, what a journey! I can’t imagine a more fun way to learn how to make a pieced quilt coat. Weekly lessons with Diana helped me learn and overcome challenges quickly. But the best part of class was the community we built along the way. Jennifer is an expert at bringing people together, and it was so beautiful to watch this wonderful group of people cheer each other on throughout the process. I’m not sure anyone came into this class overly confident, but, at the end, each coat felt like a piece of art unique to them.
StephanieWorkroom Social Sewing Classes are your answer to having a teacher in your sewing room at home. Apart from receiving a high standard of education, you have the opportunity to connect with other like-minded sewists in a safe, nurturing environment that is full of inspiration and motivation. Skills are learnt, friendships are formed, and the icing on the cake is a well-made garment you are proud of.
Schedule and Class Experience
Our Tuesday evening sessions (Eastern Time) create a consistent, engaging learning environment from January through mid-April. Each session is carefully designed to build your skills while fostering community connections.
Our course has live class instruction with real-time demonstrations; group working sessions where you can connect with classmates, work on your project, and share your progress; planning meetings; and a celebration event. We hope to see you at all course events, but we understand you might not be able to attend everything.
With that in mind, our class sessions are recorded, edited, and time-coded for future reference. Previous students have told us that they valued the ability to easily revisit lessons as they made progress on their class project, and students can continue to refer to these recordings even after the class ends.
Please note that group working sessions are not recorded.

Hear From More Past Students
StephThe uniqueness of this class was in the fact that it was not a prescribed class. It was not everyone is going to use this particular pattern with this particular piecing. The absolute strength of Diana and Jennifer was their ability to adapt to all our questions and needs as they gave us the tools to really explore our potential. From creating mood boards to helping us see our visions and through the entire process even as changes were made and pivoting happened. It was a celebration of creativity and I am beyond happy, proud, excited about the final outcome! I have an amazing quilted jacket to wear, a piece of wearable art that I had no idea I could make!
MaryI would recommend this class because it taught many skills that I haven't found anywhere else. Jennifer's strengths are her sewing knowledge, her ability to make everyone feel welcome, her flexibility to allow people to work at their own pace, and her enthusiasm. Diana's strengths are her excellent sewing skills, her ability as a teacher to give clear and concise instructions, and her very welcoming presence making people feel at ease. I was totally amazed at the creativity of the other students, and I ended up with a jacket I will be happy to wear.
