Course Structure
Patchwork and Quilting for Garment Sewing is broken up into two sections. Students may register for one or both sections. You can see all the specific class dates for each section under "Schedule" below.
Section 1: Creating Patchwork and Quilted Textiles
In this section, you'll master the art of designing and creating your own patchwork textiles, ideally suited for making quilted garments.
You'll learn foundational topics including:
- The best tools for patchwork and quilting.
- Choosing the right fabrics, battings, and backings.
- Basic color theory to design patchwork in your personal style.
- Evaluating and selecting patchwork/quilt patterns best suited for garment sewing.
- Planning the size of your quilt blocks and calculating fabric yardage.
- Reading and adapting patchwork/quilt patterns to work for your garment projects.
You'll also gain hands-on experience with essential patchwork and quilting techniques such as:
- Using a rotary cutter, quilting ruler, and cutting mat correctly.
- Sewing patchwork together accurately (we call this piecing).
- Matching corners and points, nesting seams, and pressing seams to reduce bulk.
- Sewing half-square triangles (HST) and curves easily.
- Strip-piecing for making patchwork faster.
- Squaring-off blocks.
Finally, you'll learn the best practices for quilting your patchwork textiles, including:
- Marking quilt lines and making a quilt sandwich.
- Using a walking foot and quilting with your home sewing machine.

Section 2: Sewing a Garment from Quilted Textiles
Building on the skills learned in Section 1, you'll move on to creating a garment using your quilted textiles. While students are welcome to sew a quilted garment of their choice, our official class project is the Tamarack Jacket from Grainline Studio (Bust 32–58”; Bust 81.2–147.3 cm).
This section teaches how to:
- Mark and cut your garment pattern pieces from your patchwork and quilted textiles.
- Make custom binding.
- Manage the bulk of quilted fabrics as you construct your garment.
- Sew darts.
- Sew welt pockets and patch pockets.
- Install sleeves.
- Create and install a collar.
- Finishing raw seams with binding.
- Choose and mark closures for your garment.
If you make our class project, by the end of this section you'll have completed your very own Tamarack Jacket, just in time for autumn!

Schedule
Events for Patchwork and Quilting for Garment Sewing take place on Tuesday evenings Eastern Time from June through September.
This course has live class sessions in addition to group working sessions, planning meetings, and a celebration event. We hope to see you at all course events, but we understand you might not be able to make everything. Please note that class sessions are recorded, edited, and time coded for future playback, while group working sessions are not recorded.

About Your Instructor
Diana Rodgers is a fiber artist and educator who grew up on Long Island and is now based in Bronx, NY. Since receiving a BFA from The Fashion Institute of Technology, Diana has pursued three creative career paths: fashion designer, manufacturer, and sewing educator. Sewing is the common thread among all three.
Most of her days are spent teaching people of all ages how to sew, but Diana also finds time sew her own wardrobe while also working on soft sculptures, embroideries, and quilts. Her career highlights include teaching over 1,000 people how to use a sewing machine and selling her products to MoMA Design Store.

Course Logistics
Our virtual sewing courses are hosted through SocialSewists.com using the platform Mighty Networks. SocialSewists.com is where students watch recorded materials, ask questions, share progress, and interact with each other.
Live virtual classes and working sessions take place on Zoom, ensuring you have real-time interaction with your instructor and fellow students. Students receive lifetime access to recorded and edited video playbacks of all class sessions, allowing you to review and revisit the lessons as needed. Recordings are hosted on SocialSewists.com.
Within 72 hours of registration, students receive an email with instructions to set up their Social Sewists account and access class information. $169.99 for Section 2: Sewing a Garment from Quilted Textiles. This section doesn't teach how to patchwork and quilted fabrics that are used to create a quilted garment.
Registration Requirements
Patchwork and Quilting for Garment Sewing is designed for sewists who have experience sewing their own clothes using sewing patterns. To register for this sewing class, you must know how to...
- read garment sewing patterns.
- cut out pattern pieces on grain and understand how fabric is created.
- sew straight seams, congruent curved seams, and opposing curved seams.
- ease both straight and curved seams together.
- operate and troubleshoot your sewing machine.
You must also have access to a computer, smart phone, or tablet with internet connection to participate in class.
